IIT Placements: At some IITs, around 50% students already have offers

MUMBAI: Despite the ongoing slowdown, most IITs recorded good numbers of offers at the end of the first week of their campus placement drive. At some IITs, around 50% of the total students registered for the placements, have already bagged offers. In some, the numbers are better than the previous year.

At IIT-Delhi, 782 students were already placed in the first five days. The numbers include pre-placement offers (PPOs) as well. Of the total offers, 700+ students had unique selections (some had multiple job offers). Around 28% of the total offers came from the core sector at IIT-Delhi, followed by 26% from the IT industries, and analytics and consulting profiles made up for 14% and 8% offers respectively. The higher numbers of offers came from companies such as Microsoft (30), Societe Generale (13), Mastercard (11), Standard Chartered (10), etc.

More than 50% of the students at IIT-Kharagpur are already placed in the first week, if 280 PPOs are considered. Of the over 2,000 students who registered for the placements, 1,119 are already placed at the end of the first week. “Since many students withdraw their registrations in the second phase, the numbers so far are better than 2018,” said an official from the institute. Last year, only over 900 were picked in the first week. Around 160 firms visited the campus this season over the span of six days, with the second day seeing the highest numbers of interviews slotted. Forty-four students were placed for international positions and public-sector undertakings (PSUs) picked about 20 students in the first week. International offers came in from Sony Japan, Uber, Paypal, Accenture Japan, Honeywell, etc.

Over 15 Japanese firms registered for placements at IIT-Bombay this year. Companies like Honda picked around six to seven students, even Sony Japan hired around five students from the campus, said a student. To beat the ongoing slowdown, all IITs decided to reach out to more companies. In an earlier statement, an IIT-Bombay official said that their team analysed the market trends and adopted certain strategies to connect with companies efficiently. The profiles of companies visiting IIT-B is almost similar to last year, claimed the official. “A few different profiles were introduced considering the change in market trends,” added the representative. The institute saw better placements for international profiles this year.

At IIT-Roorkee, including PPOs, 721 offers were made by 121 companies in the first five days of placements this year.

The highest package at most IITs continued to be from Microsoft, which made an offer of Rs 1.54 crore. For the domestic profiles, highest offer of Rs 62 lakh came from Cohesity.
